FCCNS Challenge

As part of the 50th Anniversary celebration of the National Seashore, Friends organized a scavenger hunt this past summer. Answering the 80 questions in the Challenge booklet ensured that visitors would discover some of the lesser-known places that are gems within the Seashore. The 50th Anniversary Challenge was a big hit with park visitors. The contest officially closed on September 30, 2011. Two entries received a perfect score of 100: a man from Provincetown and an East Sandwich family – a grandmother, her daughter and three grandchildren. Seventeen other entries had a score of 95 or higher. All of these winners will receive prizes.

Everyone who took the Challenge is now certainly better acquainted with the nooks and crannies of the Seashore. Several people sent notes expressing their thanks for providing the hunt, saying how much they learned while visiting places they had never seen. Some intend to return to favorite sites on their next visit for further exploration. Some 1400 Challenge booklets were distributed at the Visitor Centers and Old Harbor over the course of this 50th anniversary summer.

Special thanks to Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater (W.H.A.T.), Highland Museum and Lighthouse, Art's Dune Tours and the Dolphin Fleet of Provincetown for contributing some of the prizes rewarded.

A FEW COMMENTS FROM THE WINNERS

"My daughter, grandkids, husband and I had a ball this past summer with the hunt."

"The contest was SUCH FUN. We are grateful for the prizes, but the contest was the real prize. Congratulations on a great program."

"We had a great time sleuthing the answers, and I appreciated how challenging the hunt queries were."

"I'm 16 yrs old. Over the years [my family and I] have enjoyed the guided hikes, canoe trips, campfires, and lectures that the CCNS has offered us. On Aug. 7th, my family and I went to the 50th Anniversary of the Founding of the CCNS where I was given a 50th Challenge booklet. There were many places in this booklet where I had never been before . . . . some questions were easy to answer, while others required long hikes, or were tricky, or both! I really enjoyed going to all of the destinations, and learning even more about one of my favorite places on earth [CCNS]."

"I had such a wonderful time seeking the answers...much joy on my days off."

"Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this Challenge! As long term residents of New England and Massachusetts, this Challenge allowed us to see new landmarks at the Cape."

"Dear Friends, we would like to thank you for the marvelous job you did in putting together the wonderful 50th Anniversary Challenge. We discovered more 'treasures' than we ever knew existed. Thank you for your continued safe-guarding of this national treasure for us to enjoy for generations to come. Kudos to the person(s) who thought of the idea for the Challenge and to those who formulated the questions. Very well done indeed!"

"Thank you for the 50th Anniversary Challenge opportunity. It was so well done and fun to do. I've been here since 1966 and I still learned new facts!"

Now, doesn't this make YOU want to take the Challenge? The contest is over, but there is still time to print out the Challenge booklet (without the answers!) and "discover some beautiful and interesting places" in your National Seashore.
