TUESDAY EVENINGS AT SALT POND
Cape Cod Climate Change
Join CCNS's Research Plant Ecologist Stephen Smith to learn how various aspects of climate change have influenced kettle ponds, salt marshes, and nearshore ocean conditions. There have been dramatic changes in air quality, water chemistry, and vegetation in these ecosystems, which will continue to change with ongoing global warming. Dr. Smith will discuss these changes, and the research and monitoring involved. .

Dr. Smith has a BS in biology and masters and doctoral degrees from the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, University of Miami. After spending five years working on the restoration of the Florida Everglades, Smith began working at Cape Cod National Seashore in 2002. In his current position his activities are focused on understanding variabilities within plant communities in all of the national seashores ecosystems. A significant part of his work involves assessments of salt marsh ecosystem structure and function, and exotic and rare plant management.

Catboat Restoration
Tony Davis, a boat builder, sailing instructor, and owner of Arey's Pond Boat Yard, presents an inside look at the four-year restoration of the Conjurer, a 1909 H. Manley Crosby Catboat.

Arey's Pond Cats are descended from traditional wooden catboats originally launched on Narragansett Bay 200 years ago. True natives of Cape Cod, catboats have been sailed, worked hard, and have been well-loved by fishermen and recreational sailors alike ever since the first one headed up into the wind and someone exclaimed, "She comes about quick as a cat!"

FRIENDS CONCERT
"Curtis on Tour" Community Concert
Musicians from the renowned Curtis Institute of Music, in collaboration with the Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival, will perform a string quartet, as well as the introduction to a new work commissioned by the Festival in celebration of the NPS Centennial. The new work, composed by Jonathan Bailey Holland, was inspired by the Cape Cod National Seashore. It will be performed in its entirety at the Festival's opening concert on Friday, July 29.

The Curtis on Tour initiative embodies the school's "learn by doing" philosophy. The tour offers students real-world professional touring experience alongside celebrated alumni and faculty. In addition to performances, musicians offer master classes, interactive programs, and community engagement activities while on tour. Curtis on Tour also facilitates solo performances of Curtis students and alumni with professional orchestras and recital series. Since the program was established in 2008, students, faculty, and alumni have performed more than 200 concerts in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. This summer's tour includes performances at venues in Pennsylvania, and Woods Hole, Great Barrington, Eastham, Wellfleet, and Nantucket, MA. In March 2016, a Curtis on Tour ensemble offered an interactive program for students at Bourne High School during a tour to New England.

TUESDAY EVENINGS AT SALT POND
Got Salt?
Krill Carson tells about the life of Salt, the most famous humpback whale in the world. Salt, who owes its name to the white scarring on the top of its dorsal fin, like it had been "salted," was the first humpback whale to receive a name. First seen in the mid-1970s, she returns each season to feed in the cold, productive waters off Cape Cod. Salt has given birth to 13 calves, and now has 12 "grand" calves and 1 "great-grand" calf. Before the presentation, explore the massive size of an adult humpback with the New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance's life-size inflatable model of Salt.

During the program, Krill will share information about other amazing marine wildlife that come to feed in our New England waters each summer. She'll also bring marine wildlife artifacts, including real humpback baleen, whale bones, and examples of whale food, like the American sand lance and krill.
